Enjoying Austin's Great Weather Year Round
We're blessed by temperate weather all year -- take advantage of it, and feel better.
Austin's warm weather is a huge benefit to those of us with physical ailments. While many of us continue to work out at home or at physical therapy clinics, the temperate climate in Austin makes it enjoyable to get out and be physically active. Enjoying the Austin sunshine always makes us feel better, so we've put together this list of great Austin outdoor activities for you to enjoy. Why stay cooped up in hour house when you could be enjoying the great outdoors? It's good for your mind, body, and soul!
Bicycling
Austin is a great town for bicycling, particularly because of the abundance of green spaces and bike pathways. You can visit all of the bike routes in Austin at AustinBikeRoutes.com, which divides the routes up by location within Greater Austin. Don't have a bike of your own? Not a problem; you can rent one from Bicycle Sport or Austin Bike Tours & Rentals.
Bicycling is regarded as one of the top forms of physical therapy, especially for those with Parkinson's disease. Check out this video on bicycling with Parkinson's.
Swimming
Anyone with joint problems knows the freedom that comes with swimming. Luckily, Austin is one of the best places to enjoy a dip. Barton Springsis a freshwater area that's clean enough for swimming and located right in Austin. Austin has also been voted as one of the best cities for active lifestyles by Yelp, which has compiled a list of 39 different swimming pools within Austin.
Walking
Getting outside, even if just for a few minutes, is great for your health. Taking a walk in one of Austin's many green areas is an enjoyable way to work some physical activity into your day. We highly recommend the Barton Creek or Shoal Creek greenbelts, but there are literally dozens of local parks in Austin. To see a complete list of parks in Austin, visit the Austin Parks Foundation. You might also consider joining one of the Austin Walking Meetup Groups.
